What is Infrared Coagulation (IRC)?
Infrared coagulation treatment, also known as infrared photocoagulation, is a medical procedure to treat internal hemorrhoids. This procedure uses infrared light, which coagulates the blood vessels inside the hemorrhoids , causing them to shrink and eventually disappear.
How does IRC treatment work?
During the IRC procedure, a small probe is inserted into the rectum and infrared light is directed at the hemorrhoidal tissue. This light produces heat, which causes the blood vessels to constrict and scar tissue to form.
Steps in the IRC Process
- Preparation: Before the procedure, the patient may be asked to fast for a few hours and take laxatives or enemas to empty the bowels.
- Position: The patient is positioned comfortably on a table, usually on their side with their knees bent toward the chest.
- Anesthesia: Infrared coagulation is usually performed without anesthesia, as it is a relatively painless procedure. However, if the patient experiences discomfort, an anesthesia cream or gel may be used.
- Insertion of the probe: The doctor gently inserts a small probe into the rectum. This probe emits infrared light.
- Treatment: The doctor applies infrared light in short bursts to the hemorrhoidal tissue. The heat from this light causes the blood vessels to constrict.
- Multiple sessions: Depending on the severity of the condition, multiple treatment sessions may be necessary, usually spaced a few weeks apart.
Benefits of Infrared Coagulation Treatment
- Minimally Invasive: IRC is a non-surgical procedure in which no incisions are made.
- Quick and convenient: The procedure can be done in just a few minutes, making it a convenient option for individuals with busy schedules.
- Virtually painless: IRC treatment is generally well tolerated by patients and causes minimal pain or discomfort.
- High success rate: Infrared coagulation has shown a high success rate in treating internal hemorrhoids.
Limitations of Infrared Coagulation
- Multiple sessions may be needed: IRC treatment is effective, but some patients may require multiple treatment sessions to achieve ideal results.
- Limited use: IRC is primarily used to treat internal hemorrhoids; it is not as effective for external hemorrhoids.
